History of Frederick
German settlers founded Frederick, Maryland, in 1745, though the area had been inhabited by natives for years before the Europeans arrived. Frederick grew into a market town from the point where major Native American trails intersected near the Chesapeake Bay. Frederick also became known as a city of churches, with a number of denominations building houses of worship on Church Street; these would give the city its nickname, the City of Clustered Spires. The churches became a thriving presence in Frederick, and some churches dating back to the early nineteenth century still stand today. For a short time in 1861, Frederick was the capital of Maryland. The city was also important during this era as a place where slaves passed through on their way to freedom.
Frederick, MD, is the county seat of Frederick County, and it is a thriving part of the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. Frederick’s population puts it just behind Baltimore for size, and it’s also home of the U.S. Army’s Fort Detrick, which is the county’s largest employer. Frederick is just less than 50 miles northwest of Washington, D.C., and about 45 miles west of Baltimore. The Frederick Historic District occupies a large part of downtown, and it includes more than 200 shops and restaurants.

Fans of the great outdoors should make time to see the Catoctin Wildlife Preserve, which has 50 acres of park space and animals. And be sure not to miss the mural bridge over Carroll Creek, officially titled Community Bridge, a work of art by William Cochran that turned a plain concrete bridge into a showpiece symbolizing the spirit of community.
