History of Frederick

German settlers founded Frederick, Maryland, in 1745, though the area had been inhabited by natives for years before the Europeans arrived. Frederick grew into a market town from the point where major Native American trails intersected near the Chesapeake Bay. Frederick also became known as a city of churches, with a number of denominations building houses of worship on Church Street; these would give the city its nickname, the City of Clustered Spires. The churches became a thriving presence in Frederick, and some churches dating back to the early nineteenth century still stand today. For a short time in 1861, Frederick was the capital of Maryland. The city was also important during this era as a place where slaves passed through on their way to freedom.
