All About Annapolis, MD

History of Annapolis

Puritans exiled from Virginia founded Annapolis in 1649. The community went by a variety of names, like Anne Arundel Town and Providence, before 1694, when it was named Annapolis after the heir presumptive to the British throne at the time, Princess Anne. The city incorporated in 1708. Annapolis played an essential role in post-Revolutionary War America: Congress met in the city, Washington resigned from the Contentinal Army there, and the city hosted the Annapolis Convention, a precursor to the Constitutional Convention, in 1786. The Maryland State House, located in Annapolis, served as headquarters for the new country’s government from Nov. 26, 1783, to Aug. 13, 1784. Annapolis is best known today as the home of the United States Naval Academy. The academy was founded as the Naval School in October 1845; it was renamed the Naval Academy in 1850 and began granting bachelor’s degrees in 1933.

Location Information

Annapolis is the capital of Maryland. It is located in Anne Arundel County and serves as the county seat. Situated on the Severn River roughly two miles from the Chesapeake Bay, the city is equidistant from Baltimore and Washington, D.C. The city has a total area of 8.10 square miles.

Weather

The city sits only 50 feet above sea level and is part of the Atlantic Coastal Plain. The Chesapeake Bay moderates the high temperatures in the spring and summer and the extreme lows that inland cities such as D.C. face in the winter. However, the city’s summers are hot and humid, and rainy weather happens in all seasons. The city is within the humid subtropical zone.

Annapolis Attractions

Annapolis’s rich contributions to America’s history mean that historical attractions abound throughout the city. For instance, the Maryland State House was built in 1772, and in addition to serving as Maryland’s statehouse, it also served as a seat of the post-colonial American government. The Naval Academy offers tours originating at the Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center. The William Paca House and Garden is the beautifully restored 18th-century Georgian home of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and Maryland’s third governor. The Annapolis Maritime Museum offers programming about the city’s maritime history along with ecology exhibits about the Chesapeake Bay and community events. And the Banneker-Douglass Museum is Maryland’s official museum devoted to African-American heritage and honors Benjamin Banneker and Frederick Douglass with its name.

Enjoy activities outdoors? The Severn River offers many chances to get out and explore, including paddleboarding, canoeing, and kayaking. During the summer, a sailboat race is held every Wednesday night. Prefer to explore the Chesapeake Bay as a pirate? Pirate Adventures lets you set sail on a pirate ship. There are also a variety of hiking trails in and around Annapolis.

Where to Eat in Annapolis

Annapolis’s postcard-pretty setting, the wide variety of neighborhoods and suburbs, and the yearly influx of midshipmen from the Naval Academy all heavily influence Annapolis’s varied food scene. Love a pub with inexpensive Guinness pints and hearty comfort-food favorites like shepherd’s pie? Try Galway Bay. History-lovers will enjoy the Reynolds Tavern, which is housed in a building constructed in 1747. And people who prefer an old-fashioned, casual dining experience should try Chick & Ruth’s Delly. If you’re really, really hungry, take on the Colossal Shake Challenge, the Super Colossal Sandwich Challenge, or the ultimate: the Man vs. Food Challenge. Conquer a six-pound milkshake, a three-pound sandwich, or both in one hour and get your picture on their website!

Places to Stay

Annapolis hotels include more than a dozen global chains along with a quirky assortment of inns and bed and breakfasts. Chez Amis Bed and Breakfast is located in a 19th-century building in easy walking distance to the state house and waterfront. The Maryland Inn, Governor Calvert House, and Robert Johnson House make up the Historic Inns of Annapolis, three charming boutique inns in the heart of the city. And the Graduate Annapolis is a modern, stylish hotel located within walking distance of the Naval Academy and St. John’s College.
